In order to protect the area and ensure that the biosphere retains its diversity of wildlife and balance, Amigos de Sian Ka\u2019an work tirelessly to preserve the area which could otherwise fall under threat of extensive tourism. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Amigos de Sian Ka\u2019an<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amigos de Sian Ka&#8217;an is one of the most prominent non-governmental organizations in Mexico whose mission is dedicated to preserving the natural environment and promoting sustainable development as alternatives. Founded in 1986 to support the biosphere\u2019s World Heritage Site status, Amigos de Sian Ka\u2019an have continued to work towards protecting the Sian Ka\u2019an Biosphere as well as extending its efforts towards the entire state of Quintana Roo and the Eastern wing of the Yucatan Peninsula. Supported by the local society at large, Amigos de Sian Ka&#8217;an works towards preserving the Sian Ka\u2019an\u2019s extensive forests, its underground rivers and its impressive wetlands, which are the largest in Mesoamerica, and the second longest coral reef in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The support of Scientists<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amigos de Sian Ka&#8217;an bases its work on the best available scientific information as a means to influence public policies to ensure the protection of designated areas and ecological systems.
