Amigos de Sian Ka’an
Amigos de Sian Ka’an is one of the most prominent non-governmental organizations in Mexico whose mission is dedicated to preserving the natural environment and promoting sustainable development as alternatives. Founded in 1986 to support the biosphere’s World Heritage Site status, Amigos de Sian Ka’an have continued to work towards protecting the Sian Ka’an Biosphere as well as extending its efforts towards the entire state of Quintana Roo and the Eastern wing of the Yucatan Peninsula. Amigos de Sian Ka’an is a non-profit organization which depends on donations and public support.
Peaceful and Proactive
Amigos de Sian Ka’an is a proactive organization that does not use confrontational force to achieve its ends. Rather it proposes sustainable alternatives that promote greater balance and the preservation of natural resources. Supported by the local society at large, Amigos de Sian Ka’an works towards preserving the Sian Ka’an’s extensive forests, its underground rivers and its impressive wetlands, which are the largest in Mesoamerica, and the second longest coral reef in the world.

Amigos de Sian Ka’an bases its work on the best available scientific information as a means to influence public policies to ensure the protection of designated areas and ecological systems. It works together with communities, entrepreneurs, authorities and students to increase participation of society in nature conservation.
